The year 2007 has been one of steady progress for BIAPWS, with no major events being organised. The highlights of the year are presented below.
BIAPWS Membership. The number of industrial sponsors is currently 16, and increase of 3 over 2006. New members in 2007 were Centrica Energy, ESB International and Scottish and Southern Energy plc.
BIAPWS Technical Forum. The introduction of a technical presentation and discussion in the morning, before committee meetings, has been well received by the membership and has provided a useful forum for updating information and exchange of views on a number of topics. These have included carryover from boiler drums, amines for steam/water cycle conditioning, steam and water sampling, ion exchange overview and corrosion in closed circuit cooling systems. The opportunity has been taken for sponsors to bring members other than the BIAPWS representative to the meeting to benefit from and contribute to the discussions.
BIAPWS Award. In 2007 the BIAPWS Award was co-sponsored by Thames Power Services (TPS) at Barking Power Station. Although we had a late start in advertising the Award, the number of applicants was encouraging, largely from London universities. The selected candidate was Rochelle Green from Imperial College, who spent 12 weeks at Barking working on corrosion problems in the closed circuit cooling system. This proved valuable both for TPS and for Rochelle, whose project report presentation to the BIAPWS committee was very well received and acted as a very good advertisement for the Award scheme. The BIAPWS Award will continue in 2008. A second initiative for 2008 is for BIAPWS to sponsor prizes for energy related projects at a schools science fair in Hinckley, Leics.
BIAPWS Symposium.. Planning for the next symposium commenced in 2007. It will be on April 10th 2008, preceded by a half day workshop on April 9th. The venue will be the Village Hotel, Beeston, Nottingham. Following feedback from previous symposia both the workshop and symposium will include more topics related to environmental issues affecting power production as well as steam and water cycle chemistry issues.
BSI Representation. BIAPWS continues to represent the power industry on the BSI committee dealing with standards for power cycle chemistry, ie BS-EN 12952: 12 and BS-EN12953:10. Through its original initiative to review these standards BIAPWS has engaged the European members of IAPWS to make representations to CEN via their own national committees.
BIAPWS Web Site. The web site continues to be developed. An initiative in 2007 was to include a member's area where documents can be uploaded for the benefit of BIAPWS members.
